Emergency Recovery & Master Key Backup
How to use your 32-byte offline Emergency Recovery Key to restore vault access if you forget your master password.
Emergency Recovery & Master Key Backup
Because Vertueal operates on a strict Zero-Knowledge Architecture, our engineers and support staff cannot reset your master password or decrypt your vault. If you lose or forget your master password, your Emergency Recovery Key is your sole method of regaining access.
How the Emergency Recovery Key Works
When you create your vault or reset your security settings, Vertueal generates an offline recovery kit using Key Wrapping Cryptography:
- Entropy Generation: A 32-byte cryptographically secure random key (displayed as a 64-character hexadecimal string) is generated in your browser.
- Key Wrapping: A Key Wrapping Key (KWK) is derived from this string via
PBKDF2(100,000 iterations). - Payload Packaging: Your active Master Encryption Key (MEK) and account authentication hash are encrypted with the KWK and stored in the database as a
recovery_blob. - Offline Secrecy: The recovery key itself is displayed once to you and is never transmitted to the server.
Restoring Access with Your Recovery Key
If you have forgotten your master password:
Step 1: Initiate Recovery
- Open the Vertueal Password Manager login screen.
- Authenticate with your Authentic Profile account.
- On the Enter Master Password prompt, click Forgot Master Password? or Recover with Emergency Key.
Step 2: Provide Your Recovery Key
- Retrieve your physical or digital copy of the 64-character hexadecimal key.
- Carefully paste or type the key into the Emergency Recovery Key input field.
- Click Unlock with Recovery Key.
Step 3: Establish a New Master Password
- Your browser Web Worker unwraps the
recovery_blob, decrypts your MEK, and verifies your account. - You will be prompted to enter a New Master Password.
- Confirm your new master password and click Re-Encrypt Vault.
- The system automatically re-encrypts your vault, updates your server authentication hash, and prompts you to generate a fresh Emergency Recovery Kit.
Warning
Whenever you recover a vault, the previous recovery kit is superseded. Always save and securely store the newly issued recovery key!
Best Practices for Storing Your Recovery Key
| Recommended Storage Method | Risk Level | Protection Level |
|---|---|---|
| Printed Paper in a Fireproof Safe | Very Low | Excellent (Immune to remote malware and hacking) |
| Safety Deposit Box at a Bank | Very Low | Maximum (Physical institutional security) |
| Encrypted Cold USB Drive (BitLocker / LUKS) | Low | High (Protected by offline hardware encryption) |
| Unencrypted Cloud Storage (Dropbox, Google Drive) | High | Dangerous (Violates zero-knowledge model) |
| Emailing the Key to Yourself | Very High | Unacceptable (Exposes key to email breaches) |
Tip
Treat your Emergency Recovery Key like the deed to your house or your physical passport. Store it where only you or your designated estate executor can access it in an emergency.
Device Trust & Multi-Factor Authentication
Protect your vault against compromised master passwords through zero-trust hardware quarantine, device fingerprinting, and email MFA.
Ephemeral Secret Sharing (Protected Links)
Transmit confidential passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and API keys to third parties using client-side encrypted burn-on-read links.
